Mesospheric and Upper Stratospheric Temperatures From OMPS‐LP

چکیده

We report the development of a temperature profile data set from Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb (OMPS-LP) instrument on Suomi NPP satellite. The covers roughly 10 year period 2012 to 2022, temperatures are provided in altitude range between 35 70 km. algorithm uses daytime Rayleigh scattered radiation near 350 nm estimate atmospheric density profiles, which vertically integrated using hydrostatic equation pressure. Temperature profiles then derived ideal gas law. Spectral structures OMPS-LP radiances source systematic errors that limit absolute accuracy ±2 K. However, since do not change significantly over time, relative is better than ±1 Our has been designed supplement global maps produced by assimilation traditional meteorological sensors, including GNSS radio occultation provide high quality up 40–55 show comparisons other co-located datasets validate our product.

Assimilation of stratospheric and mesospheric temperatures from MLS and SABER into a global NWP model

The forecast model and three-dimensional variational data assimilation components of the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) have each been extended into the upper stratosphere and mesosphere to form an Advanced Level Physics High Altitude (ALPHA) version of NOGAPS extending to ∼100 km. This 5 NOGAPS-ALPHA NWP prototype is used to assimilate stratospheric and mesosphe...

Stratospheric and mesospheric HO2 observations from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder

This study introduces stratospheric and mesospheric hydroperoxyl radical (HO2) estimates from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) using an offline retrieval (i.e. run separately from the standard MLS algorithm). This new data set provides two daily zonal averages, one during daytime from 10 to 0.0032 hPa (using day-minus-night differences between 10 and 1 hPa to ameliorate systematic biases) ...

Uncertainties in upper stratospheric ozone trends from 1979 to 1996

The time series of differences in coincident measurements of ozone by Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) and by Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet (SBUV), SBUV/2, Umkehr and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) are analyzed, and the slopes in the differences are calculated. SAGE ozone measurements are also compared against those by HALOE. The purpose of these comparisons is to look for statis...

Night-to-night changes in the characteristics of gravity waves at stratospheric and lower-mesospheric heights

Observations made with the co-located Rayleigh lidar and MST radar systems at Aberystwyth (52.4°N, 4.1°W) in Wales and radiosondes from Valentia (51.9°N, 10.2°W) in Eire are used to investigate the changes in the vertical propagation of gravity waves during periods of 4 days in June 1995 and February 1993. In each month, the lidar observations show that the wave activity in the upper stratosphe...
